Fantabulous song yes, but I'm afraid Tom's voice has permanently scratched my eardrums! WOW!

What a completely different animal than that Eagles version! Definitely more real and much more poignant. Gets my vote.

This version is much more gruff sounding than his original - but that's Tom for you.

I love to find the origins of cover songs and see how folks reinterpret and present someone else's work. Tom Waits is one of those guys that has written some great songs but they tend to be more popular when done by someone else.

I have never heard of this person. He has a very interesting voice. I'm thinking "Without You" by Harry Nilsson is the greatest. Permanently. Well, since I was 16 anyway, which is a very long time.

Fine, fine choice. Closing Time and The Heart of Saturday Night are two of my favorite Waits albums, though I also love Raindogs, Bone Machine and Blue Valentines, so I've followed Tom Waits devoutly all across the musical map.

For me, Waits, Neil Young, Springsteen and Dylan would be all I'd need if I was banished to a desert island.

No, I really do mean interesting -- as unique and different. Um. Gravelly. But yah. And I get that each person will have their own version of "the greatest song ever written." Today, mine is Roy Orbison's I Drove All Night...I like that one a lot.

Herb - You can't go wrong with any of those folks, although I tend to be a bit picky about my Springsteen.

Paddy - Thanks for the comment, hope you find more here that is entertaining.

Kelly - Now you've got it - different songs hit you on different days, and at different times, and just seem to resonate in a perfect way.
