Build Your Own Best Of – Paul McCartney

img maccaBoy, do I have bad timing or what. Here I am posting a BYOBO from Sir Paul just one day after he celebrated his 66th birthday. Should I have done this yesterday as a birthday tribute – sure I should have. But as it is, perhaps I can be the first to wish him a happy birthday for next year.

In any case, here is a list of some of my fave Macca songs. I’ve decided not to include Wings stuff as that is a list of it’s own, and there is no way I could limit to just 15 with them piled in.

I think you’ll find some surprises here, and if you’re not familiar with them, I encourage you to check them out (clicky the linky in the list) and let me know what you think.

So once again inspired by Nat at Mini-Obs, the idea is the same as always:

Pick one of your favorite bands / artists and list 10-15 songs by that band / artist to compile your own best of compilation.

So here goes – The Best of Paul McCartney as compiled by me:

Admittedly, a good many of these would have been omitted had I included Wings material, but I think it ends up being a fine collection of tunes. I was able to find YouTube clips for all but one of them, vying for original studio versions if available rather than live clips. I hope you enjoy.

  1. it’s great to see songs from “off the ground” represented here. It’s not one of McCartney’s strongest efforts but I have a soft spot for the band he had with him at the time. Robbie McIntosh is a phenomenal guitarist.

I thought I was the only one that like “Winedark Open Sea”. :)

    great list.

    have a great weekend.

    • I agree Daniel, Robbie was great and Hamish is no slouch either.

His current touring band is really good as well, a bit more loose and raw.

Winedark is great – one of those that just clicked on first listen. He can sure write a good song, can’t he?

      Thanks

  2. I must admit I gave up on new stuff from Paul after “Flowers In The Dirt,” and that’s a long time ago!
RAM and McCartney are classic albums, though, packed with great songs. Some HAD to be hold overs from his Beatle days, but that’s not a big deal. I’m still amazed by his talent.

Great post, Scott, and some wonderful, deep cuts in that list!

    • I just love the first McCartney album. It just has a great feel to it and the songs are stellar.

I still pick up pretty much everything he does, there are always gems hidden amongst the tracks. I am particularly fond of Flaming Pie, it really is an enjoyable listen.

I have heard a Beatles version of Teddy Boy and it sounds pretty much the same.

      Thanks,
      SB
